“The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies. They are the standing army, and the militia, jailers, constables, posse comitatus, etc. In most cases there is no free exercise whatever of the judgement or of the moral sense; but they put themselves on a level with wood and earth and stones; and wooden men can perhaps be manufactured that will serve the purpose as well. Such command no more respect than men of straw or a lump of dirt. They have the same sort of worth only as horses and dogs.”
From “Civil Disobedience” by Henry David Thoreau

Recently I discussed the quote from “Civil Disobedience” and I found something familiar in it.

We have own version of the story “Wizard of Oz” in Russia. Our story is “Wizard of Emerald City”. Actually, the first book is just adaptation of original story. The second book has only some coincidence but still very close. And other books in this series are original.

And let's talk about the Second book The Marvelous Land of Oz. Or In our version it is “Urfin Juice and his wooden soldiers”.

I think our author Volkov has a great influence of Henry David Thoreau. For example in this quote we can see it. In the book Urfin Juice manufactured army of wooden soldiers with power of powder of life.

So we can see army of unscrupulous wooden men. And also we see brave and a smart man of straw, because our scarecrow was produce from straw and old farmer closes. Obviously the scarecrow is earning our respect. In late 50s military ambition of men was more important than feminine rights. Actually women have all possible rights at this time. And that's a one reason of these changes.

So Urfin Juice includes both Tip and General Jinjur. But he is not an enchanted princess Ozma. Like Jinjur He is just funny self-appointed general. But not like Jinjur he is still main evil person or assistant of dark lords form next books. Only in last book he will found some sort of happiness like a hermit. Maybe it's another connotation with Thoreau and his book “Walden”.

Generally, maybe Baum has some influence from Thoreau too, because “Wizard” is a very symbolic story, whatever language and author it was written.
