Yesterday I was at conference “The Platform 2011”. It’s the biggest event that organized by Microsoft in Russia. Another name of this conference is “Russian TechEd” because “TechEd” is a name for the biggest Microsoft events in the world. Russian event is bigger than most of them excerpt TechEd USA and probably TechEd Europe. In this year’s conference include 1,500 participants and more than 80 presentations.

The conference begun and ended dance presentation. This year’s dance presentation is short, but it is beautiful and interesting. It showed interactive elements. The dancers were dressed in black like ninja and they had glow rods. They danced at the dark hall. During that time the light figures translated to the screen with slow motion camera. So we can see some sort of light drawing.

At the conference we don’t have much news, but we have interesting details about innovative products. Microsoft event PDC finished just 2 weeks ago in the USA. On PDC event Microsoft presents new technology. In Platform event, local office of Microsoft Corporation discussed about new technologies on Russian.

Latest news are Russian users can have Xbox Live account officially. Before, Russian users should use foreign accounts or don’t use Xbox Live at all.  And of course Microsoft starts selling of Kinnect device in Russia.  Kinnect is an innovation game controller for Xbox Live games, a controller-free gaming and entertainment experience. You can play there with your whole body. It’s like a real life game. While playing, you can jump, you can move whatever you like, use your arms and sometimes you can fall. It’s a fun experience and best of all good for our health compare to just sitting on a chair with ordinary game pad.

The most of presentation were about different Microsoft projects and Technologies like Windows Server, SQL Server, SharePoint, Cloud Computing etc. We had few guest stars at conference. For example Eric Rudder the senior vice-president of Microsoft makes a keynote presentation and David Chappell an independent guru. Actually Rudder is a boring corporate guy but I like Chappell presentations. He participated in Platforma event a few years and it was always interesting. And this guy has excellent and understandable English.

“The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies. They are the standing army, and the militia, jailers, constables, posse comitatus, etc. In most cases there is no free exercise whatever of the judgement or of the moral sense; but they put themselves on a level with wood and earth and stones; and wooden men can perhaps be manufactured that will serve the purpose as well. Such command no more respect than men of straw or a lump of dirt. They have the same sort of worth only as horses and dogs.”
From “Civil Disobedience” by Henry David Thoreau

Recently I discussed the quote from “Civil Disobedience” and I found something familiar in it.

We have own version of the story “Wizard of Oz” in Russia. Our story is “Wizard of Emerald City”. Actually, the first book is just adaptation of original story. The second book has only some coincidence but still very close. And other books in this series are original.

And let's talk about the Second book The Marvelous Land of Oz. Or In our version it is “Urfin Juice and his wooden soldiers”.

I think our author Volkov has a great influence of Henry David Thoreau. For example in this quote we can see it. In the book Urfin Juice manufactured army of wooden soldiers with power of powder of life.

So we can see army of unscrupulous wooden men. And also we see brave and a smart man of straw, because our scarecrow was produce from straw and old farmer closes. Obviously the scarecrow is earning our respect. In late 50s military ambition of men was more important than feminine rights. Actually women have all possible rights at this time. And that's a one reason of these changes.

So Urfin Juice includes both Tip and General Jinjur. But he is not an enchanted princess Ozma. Like Jinjur He is just funny self-appointed general. But not like Jinjur he is still main evil person or assistant of dark lords form next books. Only in last book he will found some sort of happiness like a hermit. Maybe it's another connotation with Thoreau and his book “Walden”.

Generally, maybe Baum has some influence from Thoreau too, because “Wizard” is a very symbolic story, whatever language and author it was written.

When I'm upset or have stress, I usually walk outside. Sometimes I'm going out from the underground when I coming home from work. I have a wonderful trip between two underground stations in the old part of Moscow City. I like to discover new passages and explore some courtyards or just walk down a street. I have some instrumental prog, fusion jazz, empowering audio, and so on in my iPod. I'm listening to music, thinking, or just enjoying my movement and being outdoors. I don't like to stroll or walk slowly because I have a rapid pace. So I pass 5 or 10 kilometers in 1 or 2 hours. But it's not too important. So you can stroll in a park or in a bank or in your favorite place. Townspeople have a walk once in a blue moon. They are generally driving or riding. But we are living in wonderful and powerful places that have many amazing things. And of course many gurus used this method too. Actually I studied this method from the book “The Artist'sWay” by Julia Cameron. And at the end a quote from Tony Robins says the following: “Keep going! You are doing great!”

I had a task to translate some ancient wisdom. And I remembered about stories by Petr Bormor ([livejournal.com profile] bormor ). He is originally Russian but now he lives in Israel. He calls himself “the unkind storyteller”. As I know these stories had never been translated into English. It’s a one story that pretends to be ancient and full of wisdom.

For 3 years Prince Charming looks for an enchanted castle. He kills some dragons and defeats a lot of wizards. He was hungry and cold and he has irresistible temptations, but he conquers all of them and he keeps his honor.

Finally he finds the castle. He cuts back the blackthorn with his sword. Then he breaks a padlock. He climbs to the top of a tower where the beautiful princess lay asleep for 100 years. And then he kisses her. And nothing happens. He tries again. And he kisses her in different places. And she doesn’t have any reaction. He shakes her, and he slaps her, and he tickles her. But the princess still sleeps.

He checks that 100 years has ended already. So the evil charm must have disappeared. But it is still there.

Because it’s not enough to be strong, brave and beautiful. It’s necessary to be a prince by blood. Prince Charming was the son of a groom. But only Queen Mother knows this fact and Prince doesn't.

So if you don’t want to waste 3 years of your life you should ask advice from your mother. Even though she is … it doesn't matter at all.

Recently I had a task to describe some fancy restaurants. I saw a few reviews. They all recommend some exotic dish like deer fillet with savoy, pintade près de truffe, tomato sherbet with orchid essence, and so on. How can I be sure that the pintade isn’t a turkey and the truffle isn’t an ordinary mushroom? That's all just a reason for diarrhea.

My friends and I prefer more casual places with reasonable prices. Our favorite restaurant is called Moo-Moo. Yes, like the sound a cow makes. Moo-Moo is a restaurant chain. There are funny ceramic cows in front of some of the restaurants. I'm not sure how big a real cow is exactly, but I think this sculpture is a little bigger. Moo-Moo is a country style restaurant. It has rustic furniture and brick walls. There are no TVs, annoying music or snooty waiters. You can enjoy Russian and European dishes here like different kinds of salads, meats and vegetables. And of course they offer an assortment of teas, non alcohol drinks and beers.

Actually we can sit here and talk with each other about fiction, fantasy, games, and so on for hours.

Yuri Shevchuk is a famous Russian poet and singer. He has a lot of politically engaged songs. He started to sing in 1979. In Soviet Union, his songs were banned by the KGB a lot of times. His songs awaken a strong feeling, it is a call to take active civil position and disobey with injustice. But this man gets easily angry and in the past he had a strong alcohol addiction.
In august 2010 Russian primary minister Vladimir Putin invited several artists to an official lunch in the Kremlin (the Russian government residence in Moscow). When the meeting was started, Shevchuk began to criticize the governance politics. He did not cry or yell, but he said some unpleasant things to the prime minister in a very calm voice. Putin was shocked. He asked “I’m sorry! What’s your name?” So Shevchuk said “I’m Yuri, a musician”. It was a very emotionless answer.

For example, a few days later Bono invited Shevchuk to sing with him and he did not ask “What’s your name?” Actually at the Moscow concert Bono sang fist verse of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and then he said “Probably, You know this man” and asked Shevchuk to singing this song with him.

So Shevchuk has a low EQ, hasn’t he? Or maybe he’ll be next Russian president.

I had been thinking about creating some English blog for a while. And I tried to find some still not spammed place. So I have one. And I going to put hear some text from my discussion in my English study. Maybe this is not good English, but for me it’s very useful and  I going to improve it. And of course if you can correct me or discuss it with me you are welcome!
